The stunning new build development of apartments A waterproofing solution was required for a world class residential care home for the Jewish Community in Hampstead.
The Challenge
Hammerson House will be a world class 116-bed residential centre for the elderly Jewish Community in Hampstead. The multi-million-pound development will offer holistic, compassionate, respite and end of life care for the residents and their families in a safe, stimulating environment. The building has been designed around the principles of ‘households’ – clusters of bedrooms with supporting facilities on a domestic scale.
Waterproofing Specialists Cast Contracting Ltd (CCL) were approached by main contractors Bowmer and Kirkland and P+HS Architects during the planning stages, to help develop a comprehensive waterproofing solution for the extensive basement at Hammerson House.
The Solution
CCL recommended the installation of a Type C water management system to comprehensively waterproof the basement of the new care home.
Newton Waterproofing Systems was the manufacturer of choice, and CCL employed the use of the 8mm thick N508 membrane to the reinforced concrete retaining walls of the basement. Newton 50mm thick Fibran extruded polystyrene insulation and N508 cavity drain membrane was installed across the entire concrete slab.
In addition, Newton’s Basedrain drainage channel was installed around the entire perimeter of the basement including the incorporation of inspection ports, to provide a fully maintainable system.
The cavity drain system was serviced by a series of fully comprehensive sump pump systems, each consisting of a primary and back-up pump, high level water alarms and battery back-up system. These would all be controlled by Newton’s advanced control panels to ensure a failsafe system in the event of a power shortage.
To complete the watertight solution to the lightwells and lift pits within the basement, Newton s 107F cementitious waterproof coating was spray applied to the concrete upstands.
