Friars Walk Shopping Centre, Newport
Waterproofing solutions were required to the deck areas of Newport’s prestigious new shopping centre and car parking facilities.
The Challenge
Friars Walk is a brand-new retail and leisure complex that has been developed by Queensberry Real Estate in partnership with Newport City Council. It comprises of 390,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space and a wide range of shops and restaurants, all supported by a new, modern 350 space car park and bus station. Friars Walk has transformed the centre of Newport and has given people a reason to return to the city as the regions premier retail destination.
Cast Contracting Ltd were commissioned by Bowmer and Kirkland to provide comprehensive waterproofing and tanking solutions to over 4,500 sq.m of the large, covered and open deck areas within the new shopping centre and throughout the extensive car parking facilities.
The Solution
CCL carried out mechanical preparation to remove latents, contaminants and dust from the surface, before a coat of RIW Cementseal Primer was applied by handheld brushes to the pre-soaked concrete substrate and allowed to become transparent. RIW Cementflex waterproof cementitious coating was then applied in two coats by handheld brushes, ensuring that each coat had sufficiently set. After the final coat had cured for at least three days, RIW Double Drain drainage layer was installed over the majority of the waterproofed areas prior to the concrete paviour finishes being installed.
Due to the imminent opening of the shopping centre, inclement weather conditions and other follow-on trade activities, our site team faced huge installation issues, having to work outside normal working areas to achieve the staged deadlines imposed by Bowmer & Kirkland.

THE CHALLENGE
Woburn Forest is the newest Center Parcs village to be built in the UK and is situated only an hour from London in a stunning 365-acre woodland site. The village contains all of the Center Parcs attractions including the largest state-of-the-art Subtropical Swimming
Paradise and the luxury Aqua Sana Spa. RIW Specialist Waterproofing Contractor Cast Contracting Ltd (CCL) were awarded the prestigious project by Bowmer & Kirkland to supply and install a comprehensive waterproofing solution to the wet areas and 15 spa experience rooms of the luxury Aqua Sana Spa.
THE SOLUTION
CCL recommended the installation of RIW Cementflex cementitious waterproof system to be applied across approx. 1000m² of wet area. The Cementflex coating was spray applied in 2 x 1mm coats to the
concrete slabs, including returning under the internal partitions before they
were built, as well as returning onto suitable upstands/abutments & gullies. A combination of RIW Cementfill HB Fillets & Cementjoint were installed at critical wall/floor junctions. Once the underfloor heating had been installed and the screed formed (by a third party), the CCL specialist team installed RIW Tilesafe sheet waterproofing membrane across the top of the screed returning onto all suitable upstands. RIW Tilesafe reinforcing tape and jointing compound were applied to all critical wall/floor junctions to eliminate the ingress of water. Due to the imminent launch of the new Center Parcs village, the team had to achieve the installation to strict deadlines imposed by Bowmer & Kirkland.
